How to Build a Grow Box With LED Lighting

Growing your own plants at home can be even more productive when you get them to grow inside in an organic grow box. With the advent of bright light emitting diodes, or LEDs, you can add intense light close to your seedlings without burning the plants. The construction of a grow box basically involves using a structure large enough to house your plants with extra space for air ventilation.

Instructions

Line a large box or plastic storage container with sheets of aluminum foil. Use a few beads of craft glue along the inside of the box to hold the foil in place. The foil will reflect more of the light around the plants than a box without foil.

Place a shallow tray in the bottom of the box to hold drainage water. This makes it easier to water the plants and keeps the bottom of the grow box clean.

3.Set your soil-free filled plant pots onto the tray, while leaving enough space between the plants for good air circulation.

Attach two rows of high-intensity white LED light strips to the bottom of the cover of the grow box. Some strips come with pre-attached adhesive while others require a few screws to keep them in place. Drill a hole through the side edge of the cover with a drill. To keep the hole small, drill the hole as large as the width of the cord and slice from the hole to the edge of the cover. Pry open the slit with a utility knife to slide your plug through.

Place the cover over the organic grow box. Plug in the LED lights to test. Remove the cover. Plant your seeds, add water and nutrients as needed per plant. Replace the cover on the box, turn on the LED lights and wait for the plants to sprout.

LED notifications are useful for times when you have the phone's sound and vibrations settings turned off or if you don't hear the tone that plays when you receive a message. The Motorola Backflip has an LED notification feature, but it is not available out of the box.

The Motorola Backflip has one LED light around the battery-charging port on the right side of the phone. The light blinks when the battery is running low and remains lit when you charge the battery. When first released, the Motorola Backflip LED had no other function beyond a battery-charging indicator. The LED was not functional for message notifications; you needed to turn on the phone screen to check for received messages. The Android 2.1 update for the Motorola Backflip included a setting that, when enabled, gives the battery-charging LED message-notification capabilities.

Download Update
Visit the Motorola website and download the Android 2.1 update to your computer. Connect your phone to the computer using the supplied USB data cable and tap “USB Drive” when the message “USB Connected” appears on the screen. Open “My Computer” on your computer. You’ll see phone icon labeled “Removable Disk.” Click and drag the downloaded file onto the phone. Once the transfer is complete, disconnect the phone from your computer.

Updating Phone
Before performing the Android 2.1 update, make sure the phone is fully charged. You may also want to back up all of your data in case a problem occurs during the update and your data are deleted. On the list is a “Notification LED” option. Tap the check box next to the option to place a check mark in the box, indicating it is enabled.

Considerations
You can turn off the message notification LED by opening the “Sound & Display” menu and tapping the check box to remove the check mark. Though the LED won’t blink anymore when you receive messages, it still turns on when the phone battery is low or when you’re charging the phone. You should note that turning on the notification LED option uses more battery power than when it’s off, though you shouldn’t see a significant drop in battery life.

Light-emitting diodes have graduated well beyond their initial roles as panel indicator lights. Now LEDs are used for applications such as flashlights, automobile headlights and architectural lighting. Although LEDs are readily available, they're not very useful unless the light they generate can be routed from where it is to where it needs to be.

For use as laboratory sources, it's often valuable to collimate the light from an LED, to turn it into a "light beam." The calculations are more involved when using high-power LEDs for specialty or general lighting.

Using an LED as a Collimated Source

Identify the illumination pattern for the LED. Usually the manufacturer will, at a minimum, provide the divergence angles in the x and y directions.

As an example, assume the LED has a divergence of 38 degrees in x and 47 degrees in y.

Determine the appropriate focal lengths to get the desired beam size.

The focal length is given by the formula f = D/(2*tan(alpha/2)), where D is the desired beam diameter and alpha is the full beam divergence in the direction in question.

For this example, take a desired beam diameter of 25 mm. Then,

fx = 25/(2*tan(38/2) = 36 mm

fy = 25/(2*tan(47/2) = 29 mm

3.Place the shorter focal length cylindrical lens at its own focal length away from the LED.

In the example, a cylindrical lens with a focal length of 29 mm will be placed 29 mm away from the LED, oriented so that it focuses the y direction.

Mark an index card with the desired beam diameter, and check to see that the beam stays at that size over the required distance. Adjust the position of the lens to keep the beam in the desired diameter.

In the example, the index card will have a 25 mm diameter circle, and the lens is adjusted to keep the vertical dimension of the beam as nearly as possible within the circle.

Place the longer focal length lens its own focal length away from the LED.

For the example, a cylindrical lens with a focal length of 36 mm is placed 36 mm away from the LED, oriented so that it focuses the x direction.

Adjust the second lens position to optimize the collimation. Use the index card as a guide.

To complete the example, adjust the 36 mm focal length lens to keep the width of the beam as nearly as possible within the circle.

How to Mount an ISO to a Thumb Drive

An ISO image is digital copy of a physical CD or DVD. It is often used to digitally distribute operating systems (mainly Linux) as well as used to backup other CDs or DVDs. If your computer does not contain a disc drive, you will need to mount the ISO to a flash thumb drive to access and use the data contained on the ISO file. This is accomplished using a virtual disc drive and some basic Windows commands. Instructions 1 Download and install a virtual disc image mounting utility. These utilities create a virtual disc drive, allowing you to mount the ISO file, as if it were a physical CD/DVD in a physical CD/DVD drive. Some applications that allow you to do this are MagicDisc, Daemon Tools and Virtual CloneDrive. 2 Launch the virtual disc drive application and open the ISO image to mount it. Be sure to note the drive letter associated with the virtual drive. 3.Insert the USB flash into the computer's USB slot. 4 Open the Command Prompt by typing "cmd" into the "Search" box (Vista and later) or opening the "Run" dialog from the "Start" menu and typing "cmd" and clicking "OK." 5 Type "xcopy D:\*.* /s /e /f F:\" and hit Enter. Replace "D" with the letter of the virtual disc drive. Replace "F" with the letter of the USB flash drive. Allow the process to complete. It may take a while depending on the size of the ISO image.
