How to Update Software for an FTA Receiver

In a field where it's not uncommon for satellite broadcast to go offline and or to be updated with new protocols, free-to-air rerceiver software updates can help your satellite receiver to stay relevant as long as possible in the ever-changing landscape of the free to air satellite television. Software updates can correct receiver glitches, update the receiver's menu and, in some cases, even upgrade the receiver's compatibility with new audio/video stream formats. And while firmware updates are not frequently produced, when they are available, you should seriously consider installing them.

Instructions
Via USB

Visit your free-to-air receiver manufacturer's support page, and download the latest software update for your receiver.

Use the Windows ZIP Utility to extract the update from it's ZIP file container. Copy the software update to a USB jump drive, and then insert the drive into the USB port on your receiver.

Use your remote control to launch the receiver's onscreen menu. Locate the update on the USB drive and then install it.

Download and install the software update loader tool--you can find the loader tool online on the receiver manufacturer's support page.

Connect your satellite receiver to your computer via a RS-232 serial cable--connect the cable between the serial ports on both devices. Power on the satellite receiver.

Click on the port selection option and in the loader utility, and set the serial communication port number--unless you have more than one serial port, it should be "Com1."

Locate the update file on your computer using loader utility file explorer. And you've located the update, click on the loader option to send the update to your receiver.
Tips & Warnings
To avoid damaging your free to air receiver, only update your receiver with software provided by the manufacturer. If you decide to use third party software, vet the software's source for legitimacy to avoid installing an update embedded with a virus.
