How to Build an LED Plant Light

Gardeners have begun to experiment with LED lights set up over germinating plants to stimulate early root growth. The theory is that combining red and green LEDs provides the spectrum of light that encourages plant germination and early seedling growth. Here is a simple design red and blue LED Christmas lights mounted on a plastic storage bin lid.

Instructions

Drill rows of quarter-inch holes in the top of the plastic storage bin lid. Drill 10 rows of five lights evenly spaced across the top of the lid. Stagger the rows so that bulbs on adjacent rows are offset to each other.

Plug the LED lights securely into the holes you drilled in the storage bin lid. Insert them from the top so that the bulbs stick out the bottom. On each row, insert two red bulbs and then a blue one. Continue plugging the bulbs in back and forth down the rows until all the bulbs are plugged in.

Plug both strings of lights into the power strip and plug the power strip into the wall to test the installation. If all the lights light up, you are ready to mount the LED.

Cut two three-inch ventilation holes in opposite ends of the storage bin. Mount the small ventilation fan over one of the holes pointed into the box. Plug the fan into the power strip.

Pot your seeds, water them and set them in the bottom of the storage bin to germinate. Snap the lid onto the box and plug in the power strip. Your seedlings will have a well-ventilated and well-lit place to grow. Water the seedlings as needed. When they are grown and ready to transplant, remove them from the box. If you wish to continue growing them indoors you can set the LED lid panel on the table next to them to further stimulate their growth into fully mature plants.

Tips & Warnings
A more expensive solution is to purchase and mount LED full spectrum panels in the box lid or on a frame 12 inches above the growing plants. Either way, LEDs run cooler than other types of grow lights and reduce your energy costs dramatically.

How to Connect Aftermarket Car Lighting

You just installed aftermarket lighting to your car or truck and now you need to connect it to the battery. You will need to set up the lights to turn off automatically when the ignition is off. This method of hook up prevents you from accidentally leaving on the aftermarket lights and draining the car battery.

Instructions

Strip the ends of the positive and negative wires on the lighting, so you have about 1/2 inch of exposed copper wire.

Attach the negative wire from the lighting to the negative terminal of the car battery.

3.Open the fuse panel inside the car. Notice that there are two very small spots on each fuse where the plastic is peeled away and you can see the metal of the fuse.

Begin methodically touching the wire to the tops of each fuse and checking to see if your device turns on. The car should not be turned on for this step.

Identify a fuse that does not allow your device to come on with the car off. Hold the wire against it and start the car to verify that your device does come on when the car is started.

Connect the lighting device to the fuse. Pull the fuse out and place the wire in the side of the fuse socket before the fuse, then put the fuse back in place.

Until you learn to understand your BlackBerry's color-coded messages, the red, blue, yellow and green flashes can be distracting and annoying. Some are nearly useless in many cases; the blue light means your BlackBerry is connected to a Bluetooth device and the green light means you have signal --- neither of which probably comes as a surprise. The red light means you have a new voicemail, text message or similar piece of communication, while the yellow light means your battery is low.

Instructions
Red Light

Click on the "Profiles" icon in your BlackBerry. This looks like a megaphone with added details depending on your current profile.

Scroll to the bottom of the list of profiles and click the "Advanced" option. This opens another list of your profiles. Scroll to highlight the profile in which you want to stop the red light from flashing, then press the "Menu" button. Click "Edit" in the list that appears.

3.Scroll up or down to find the message type for which you wish to stop the red light from flashing in this profile, then click it. For example, if you do not want the red light to flash when you receive SMS texts, click the "SMS Text" option.

Highlight the words "LED Flashing" beside the "Repeat Notification" option. Click on these words, then click "None" in the options list that appears. This turns off the red flashing light for this option in this profile. Repeat this process for other types of messages, such as emails or calendar alerts, and in other profiles if desired. Press the "Menu" button, and then click "Save."

Blue Light

Click the "Options" icon, which looks like a wrench. This opens a list of options.

Click "Bluetooth" in the list of options. This displays a list of the Bluetooth devices currently paired with your BlackBerry.

Press the "Menu" button, then click "Options" in the list that appears.

Green Light

How to Repair LED Light Circuits

If you've tried to use your LED light circuit and found that it's not working correctly, doing some basic repair is a great way to save on buying a new circuit altogether. LED lights are used for many things, such as Christmas lights, clock displays and power indicators, and knowing how to repair them can be a valuable skill. It helps to have a general knowledge of electrical circuits, but even without background knowledge, it is easy to fix your lights in time for Christmas.

Identify broken LEDs. You can do this easily by powering up your circuit and seeing which bulbs don't light. Generally, replacing faulty bulbs will solve issues with LED circuits. Depending on your circuit, you will need to connect the battery or plug it in. If the entire circuit isn't lighting up, there could be a problem with your power source.

Remove the broken LEDs. You may need a soldering iron to do this, depending on how the LEDs are connected to the wire. In commercial LED light circuits, there may be sockets for each individual lamp, and you can simply pull them out. Note the polarity of the LEDs you remove. The polarity is determined by the differing lengths of the connectors coming from the base of the bulb. The shorter wire is the cathode, the negative charge. Remember which side this is on; the socket should be cut to suit the differing lengths.

3.Replace the LEDs with lights of similar voltage. LEDs do not need to be matched in voltage by a common and exact resistance value, just a general one. This makes replacing bulbs easier, because you can identify suitable LEDs by their color. There are two general groups of LED light voltage: those around 3.2V are white, blue or green, and those around 2V are red, orange or yellow. Your LED circuit is liable to be made up of one of those groups of colors.

Connect your replacement lights as needed. This can differ across types of circuit, and if you've got a set of Christmas lights, the sockets may have varying designs, and your new bulb connectors may have to be bent or otherwise cajoled into the correct shape. This may seem a somewhat brutal solution to a delicate problem, but there is no electrical difference in these sockets, only a cosmetic one.

Check the socket's polarity if a bulb still doesn't work. In some circuits, a socket might be the wrong way around, so even a new bulb won't work. Sockets are made to fit the longer positive connector and the shorter cathode. Across a circuit, the sockets should all be aligned in the same direction. If they are not, you can fix the problem. Disconnect the wire from either side of the reversed socket (with a soldering iron, if necessary). Turn it around, and reconnect the wires. The polarity of the socket should now match the rest of the ones in the circuit, and the bulb should light.

How to Make LED Brake Light

LED brake lights are a popular aftermarket add-on because LEDs are much brighter than halogen bulbs. LED lights also last much longer, requiring fewer replacements. Installing LED brake lights onto your vehicle is fairly simple, provided you have LED brake light bulbs compatible with your specific vehicle. To install the lights, you must simply remove the halogen brake light bulb and install the LED light. Alternatively, you can install an LED tail light assembly that will also replace your tail lights and turn signal lights.

Instructions

Lift up the hood of your vehicle and use a socket wrench to disconnect the battery. Remove the negative terminal first, then the positive terminal.

Open the trunk, rear door or tailgate of your vehicle to gain access to the tail light assembly screws. Remove any carpeting from the trunk or rear area.

Remove the screws from behind the tail light assemblies with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the assembly out of the vehicle and disconnect its electrical connector.

Pull the brake light bulb out of the assembly and replace it with an LED brake light. Place the assembly back into the vehicle and reconnect the electrical connector. If you are replacing the entire assembly, simply place the new assembly into the vehicle where the old assembly was and connect the electrical connector.

Reinstall the screws and close the trunk, rear door or tailgate. Reconnect the battery and close the hood.
