Apple’s IAd Is Said to Cut Advertising Prices

Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iAd mobile-advertising business has cut rates by as much as 70 percent as some marquee clients are using rival services, two people with knowledge of the matter said, signaling the company is struggling to parlay its technology leadership into success in the ad industry.
When Apple rolled out iAd a year ago, companies such as Citigroup Inc. (C) and J.C. Penney Co. were being charged $1 million or more to run ad campaigns. Today those brands aren’t using iAd, and Apple is offering packages for as little as $300,000, said the people, who asked not to be named because the rates are private.
Even with lower prices, some advertising agencies are balking at iAd’s cost, especially because the promotions only reach Apple users. They’re turning instead to Google Inc. (GOOG)’s AdMob, Millennial Media and Greystripe, which serve a range of devices. That means Apple risks losing ground in a market that will generate $2.5 billion by 2014, according to EMarketer Inc.
“Apple’s closed ecosystem may have been interesting in the short run for advertisers, but in the long run they priced themselves out,” said Thom Kennon, senior vice president of strategy for the Young & Rubicam ad agency in New York.
Makers of applications, who benefit from iAd by selling advertising, are getting only 5 percent to 15 percent of their space filled by the Apple system, according to Mobclix Inc., an exchange for buying and selling mobile ads.
Lower Prices
Apple has cut the minimum ad purchase from $1 million to $500,000, and it’s offering agencies deals for as low as $300,000 if they bring together multiple campaigns, the two people said.
The company still has the advantage of offering the biggest selection of mobile applications. Its App Store, which provides software for its iPhone, iPad tablet and iPod Touch media player, has more than 425,000 programs. When an ad runs within an app, Apple gives the developer 60 percent of the revenue.
Natalie Kerris, a spokeswoman for Cupertino, California- based Apple, said the company continues to sign some of the world’s leading brands.
“In its first year iAd has launched more than 100 campaigns in seven countries,” she said.
Apple also is taking steps to attract more advertising. In addition to offering lower prices, it hired a former ad agency executive, Carrie Frolich, who was the head of digital for WPP Plc’s MEC. And Apple added a new online design feature, called iAd Producer, to help agencies design ads more quickly.
Disney, AT&T
Twenty companies have used iAd in the past month, including Walt Disney Co. (DIS), where Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs is the biggest shareholder; AT&T Inc., a carrier of Apple’s iPhone; and insurance provider Geico Corp. About 50 campaigns will be joining the platform in the coming months, according to Apple.
The iAd system carried unrealistic expectations from developers and advertisers, said Noah Elkin, an analyst at EMarketer, a research firm in New York. Its biggest contribution is validating the nascent market of showing advertisements to people on their smartphones, he said.
“It has been successful in that it created a beacon for mobile advertising,” he said. “Advertising was always going to be a minor revenue source for them.”
Even if prices have come down, Apple legitimized the idea of spending large sums on mobile ads, said Krishna Subramanian, the co-founder of Palo Alto, California-based Mobclix.
“You can go to an automotive company and pitch a $500,000 to $1 million campaign, and it’s realistic,” he said.
Disappointing Results?
Still, iAd has frustrated some developers, which haven’t made as much money as expected, Subramanian said. They have turned to other companies to sell ad space, he said.
State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. is using competing mobile-adverting networks after being part of the initial group of companies to advertise through Apple, said Ed Gold, the insurer’s advertising director.
J.C. Penney, another inaugural user of iAd, also is working with other services, said Danika Berry, a spokeswoman for the retailer. Citigroup confirmed that it’s not currently using iAd as well. The companies said they may use iAd in the future.
Rival mobile-advertising companies have been luring clients by undercutting Apple on price and promoting their ability to run across multiple devices, including handsets from Samsung Electronics Co., HTC Corp. and Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. - - phones that rely on Google’s Android operating system. Millennial Media also hired one of Apple’s iAd sales managers.
Limited Audience
“You’re cutting your potential audience in half by focusing on a single platform,” said Dane Holewinski, head of marketing at Greystripe, which was acquired by ValueClick Inc. (VCLK) in April. About 80 percent of the company’s advertising campaigns work across multiple devices. “Advertisers don’t care about platform. They care about audience, performance and engagement.”
The iAd system carries a level of prestige, in part because of its sleek design, said Rob Norman, CEO of ad agency GroupM North America, whose clients using iAd include Unilever NV.
“Everyone likes the consumer experience it creates,” he said. “Everyone wants to be there because they think that, possibly since television, this is one of the most elegant customer experiences.”
Still, companies must account for the cost, Norman said.
“We’d all like to stay at the Four Seasons, but not if it costs $150,000 a night,” he said. “There’s a price equation.”
Quattro Acquisition
The iAd platform was started after Apple acquired mobile- advertising company Quattro Wireless last year. It was introduced last July at the company’s annual developers conference as a way to take more interactive features, such as videos, and embed them within applications.
Apple targets ads by using data from the millions of accounts registered with its iTunes software. The pitches are made based on demographic information, along with a user’s music, movie or App Store purchases. Advertisers can choose “buckets” of users to target, based on demographics, though they can’t pick which specific applications the ads run in.
When it was introduced, Jobs said most other mobile advertising “really sucks.”
For now, many ad agencies haven’t embraced iAd as an improvement over the old approaches, said Rachel Pasqua, vice president of mobile for wholesale iphone ICrossing, an online marketing firm. She cites the cost, time needed to get ads approved, limited size of the audience and control Apple has kept over data.
“I haven’t encouraged any of my clients towards it,” Pasqua said. “I haven’t seen a huge value proposition.”
While Apple has stumbled in advertising, its influence over the technology industry means it’s too soon to count the company out, said EMarketer’s Elkin.
“IAd may have receded in to the background, but it’s too early to assume it’s not going to come back,” he said.

Dutch populist Geert Wilders acquitted of hate speech

The case was seen by some as a test of free speech in a country which has a long tradition of tolerance and blunt talk, but where opposition to immigration, particularly from Muslim or predominantly Muslim countries, is on the rise.
Instantly recognizable by his mane of dyed blond hair, Wilders, 47, is one of the most outspoken critics of Islam and immigration in the Netherlands.
His Freedom Party is now the third-largest in parliament, a measure of support for its anti-immigrant stance, and is the minority government's chief ally. But many of Wilders' comments -- such as likening Islam to Nazism -- are socially divisive.
The presiding judge said Wilders's remarks were sometimes "hurtful," "shocking" or "offensive," but that they were made in the context of a public debate about wholesale car dvd Muslim integration and multi-culturalism, and therefore not a criminal act.
"I am extremely pleased and happy," Wilders told reporters after the ruling. "This is not so much a win for myself, but a victory for freedom of speech. Fortunately you can criticize Islam and not be gagged in public debate."
The ruling could embolden Wilders further. He has already won concessions from the government on cutting immigration and introducing a ban on Muslim face veils and burqas.
"This means that his political views are condoned by law, his political rhetoric has been legalized," said Andre Krouwel, a political scientist at Amsterdam's Free University.
"This has made him stronger politically. He is needed for a political majority, he is basically vice prime minister without even being in the government."
Some Dutch citizens have started to question their country's traditionally generous immigration and aid policies, worried by the deteriorating economic climate, higher unemployment, incidence of ethnic crime and signs that Muslim immigrants have not fully integrated into Dutch society.
Similar concerns have helped far-right parties to gain traction elsewhere in Europe, from France to Scandinavia.
Farid Azarkan of the SMN association of Moroccans in the Netherlands said he feared the acquittal could further split Dutch society and encourage others to repeat Wilders's comments.
"You see that people feel more and more supported in saying that minorities are good for nothing," Azarkan said.
"Wilders has said very extreme things about Muslims and Moroccans, so when will it ever stop? Some will feel this as a sort of support for what they feel and as justification."
Minorities groups said they would now take the case to the United Nations Human Rights Committee, arguing the ruling meant the Netherlands had failed to protect ethnic minorities from discrimination.
"The acquittal means that the right of minorities to remain free of hate speech has been breached. We are going to claim our rights at the U.N.," said Mohamed Rabbae of the National Council for Moroccans.
Wilders, who has received numerous death threats and has to live under 24-hour guard, argued that he was exercising his right to freedom of speech when criticizing Islam.
The Amsterdam court had used a Supreme Court ruling -- that an offensive statement about someone's religion was not a criminal offence -- as the basis of its decision, leading to acquittal, the judge said.
Unusually, the prosecution team had also asked for an acquittal, arguing that politicians have the right to comment on problem issues and that Wilders was not trying to foment violence or division.
"I think it is good that he has been acquitted," said Elsbeth Kalff, an 83-year-old retired sociologist in Amsterdam.
"He has been told that he has been rude and offensive but it is on the border of what the criminal law allows. It is good, the Netherlands is, after all, a tolerant country and we should keep it that way."

Hulu Considering Selling Itself After Receiving An Offer

    CNBC and WSJ reporters.
Julia Boorstin at CNBC says the offer did not come from Google, but doesn't say who the offer did come from.
Hulu is not necessarily going to accept the offer. It is currently weighing its options.
We're not sure who would buy Hulu. It's a tricky business because it relies on contracts with Disney, News Corp, and NBC to get its content. Those three companies, along with Providence Equity, are stakeholders in Hulu. So, for now, it's in their best interest to keep Hulu going.
Hulu had been thinking about an IPO late last year, but shelved those plans because it doesn't have long term rights to the content it streams.
Update: Here's the full WSJ story
Don't Miss: Hulu On Track To Generate $500 Million In Revenue This Year

RIM is black-burying carriers with half-baked BlackBerrys

Launching new products is always difficult. Launching new products with hundreds of different carriers is exponentially more difficult. Apparently there is an easy way and a hard way to do things, however, and RIM has been making carriers offers they can’t refuse. BGR has learned from a trusted source that RIM has been strong-arming several carriers, essentially forcing them to approve devices they normally would not move through the Technical Acceptance phase.
Here is how it works: once an OS software build (bundle) has been tested internally at RIM, and the OS performs well, it moves up to be a Technical Acceptance candidate. The OS is then sent to the carrier to test and approve, or test and reject. If a carrier rejects a build, it can take weeks to get a new build tested and approved, and it can slow down a device’s release by months — as evidenced many times with different BlackBerry products in the past.
What’s the problem, then? We have been informed by a very reliable source at a major carrier that RIM has been putting an enormous amount of pressure on carriers to approve the upcoming BlackBerry smartphones like the BlackBerry Bold 9900 — phones that have to hold RIM over until its next-generation platform launch in 2012 — and that certain carriers will be approving the devices, “no matter what — with bugs and problems.”  Additionally, RIM is putting huge pressure on its internal engineers to deliver Technical Acceptance bundles even when there are serious problems with the OS. In short, RIM is pushing unfinished OS builds from its engineers to the carriers, and demanding that the carriers approve them.

  • The thing is, this isn’t something new, and it’s part of the reason your BlackBerry is so buggy, reboots randomly, and there are possible signal and connection issues. There have been multiple devices, we have been told, that have been forced through the Technical Acceptance process with multiple carriers, and it’s one of the reasons some carriers launch devices sooner than others (barring any exclusivity arrangements) — some play ball but others won’t. Remember how Rogers was one of the first carriers to launch the BlackBerry Bold 9000 while AT&T didn’t launch the device until November? The device constantly failed Technical Acceptance on AT&T, but Rogers pushed the device out anyway as a result of pressure from RIM. And Rogers is most certainly not the only carrier that has found itself in that position.
Spokespeople from RIM and Rogers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. An AT&T spokesperson declined to comment.

    Microsoft's accidental success story

    - Microsoft introduced a peripheral device for gaming in November called Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360. The product turned out to be a brain-dead simple-to-use, innovative and completely new user interface. It became the fastest-selling consumer electronics product in history, and has now sold more than 10 million units.
Kinect's reception has been more akin to an Apple product like the iPod, iPhone or iPad than a Microsoft one. Usually Microsoft has to spend hundreds of millions of marketing dollars just to become a second-tier player. Think of Bing, or Windows Phone 7. But not the Kinect. It just took off. Everyone loves it. The Kinect is Microsoft's iPad -- the hot consumer appliance with no significant competition.
Then something really unusual happened. Kinect became the hottest platform in the industry for bold new inventions. Scientists, hobbyists and inventors started "hacking" the Kinect to build crazy new contraptions, all without Microsoft's knowledge or permission.
Microsoft is used to battling pirates, counterfeiters, hackers and users who want to use without paying. So it was even more surprising when the company embraced and encouraged the movement. Microsoft's approach to Kinect reminds me of Google's approach to Android. In both cases, the companies have no idea where others will take the platform and take a hands-off approach to the direction of innovation.

    Richi Jennings:
Microsoft Kinect in the enterprise: Not just for gaming
Microsoft officially sanctioned such "hacks" this week by releasing a software developers kit (SDK) for Kinect. What's unusual about the release is that Microsoft says it's "a free beta release for noncommercial applications." In other words, it's for hobbyists, tinkerers, hackers, scientists and inventors, rather than industry partners, software developers and OEMs. The company plans to release a commercial version later, which can be used for third-party applications that will be sold to the public.
Microsoft's SDK is very exciting for one major reason: People have already done mind-blowing things with Kinect even without the SDK. Kinect has been hacked to make serious breakthroughs in technology for marketing, medicine, business, computer science, entertainment and robotics.
    Marketing
A Russian company called ARDoor has created an in-store "mirror" called the AR Door Kinect Fitting Room that superimposes clothes on shoppers. They can quickly cycle through different outfits to see how they'll look.
    Medicine
An academic researcher at the Technical University of Munich created something he calls the "Magic Mirror." Designed for teaching anatomy, the system creates the illusion of a mirror that shows the user's insides through a "hole" in the body.
    Business
A graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill created a 3D video conferencing system using four Kinect devices. The system uses head tracking to simulate reality. For example, with a conventional videoconferencing system, the other user is just flat on the screen. If you're looking at the user straight on, the view doesn't change when you move to the side. But with the Kinect-based 3D system, if you move to one side, you see the side of his or her face, rather than just the front.
    Computer Science
MIT researchers built a working version of the user interface from the Steven Spielberg movie Minority Report, which involves computer control via very fine hand and finger gestures.
Researchers at Germany's Fraunhofer Institute created an elegant system for controlling a Windows PC with in-the-air hand gestures.
    Entertainment
One "Kinect hacker" invented a motion-controlled sound-and-laser system that enables an on-stage performer to control an audio track and laser lights just by moving around. The laser beams can imitate the performer's motion or respond to gesture-based commands, and the sounds mirror the movement of the lights.
    Accessibility
A Portugese scientist created a shopping cart system called the wi-GO for people in wheelchairs that follows the user around automatically.
A team of researchers at Sweden's Lulea University of Technology invented an autonomous wheelchair for the blind. The wheelchair contains a map of its surroundings, which it uses to navigate. But it can also avoid obstacles and people.
French researchers are working on a Kinect-based system for reading sign language. The user signs, and the system translates it into written or spoken language.
    Robotics
UC Berkeley scientists created an autonomous flying robot using Kinect. The system's software can detect the floor, which it uses to know its own altitude, as well as objects and most importantly researchers to avoid flying into them.
Researchers at Technical University Munich used Kinect to enable a robot to shop and cook. Their custom software identifies the locations of products on a shelf, as well as ingredients on a counter, or cooking tools like pots, pans, spoons and so on.
Engineers at the University of Pennsylvania even taught a robot to read signs and posters using Kinect. The Kinect hardware is used to identify the signs, and compensate for different reading angles, which enables better optical character recognition.
Not bad for a cheap gaming peripheral.
Microsoft has an amazingly hot product on their hands, and something even better: A hot platform.
There's no question that in-air gesture-based interfaces will be huge in the future. Microsoft's lead is so vast, and so many people have already invested so much time and effort mastering the system, that it's unlikely anyone will catch them.
Microsoft is helping out with SDKs. But to truly exploit this once-in-a-generation opportunity, Microsoft should be funding hot Kinect projects, awarding grants to Kinect-based academic researchers and giving away Kinect units to inventors like candy. And Microsoft should wait and see who builds what, then buy the companies with technology that can be integrated into either Xbox or Windows.
Nobody should have to tell the company's motion-gaming division the obvious truth: Microsoft needs to make the right moves if it wants to win. And so far, so good.

Facebook Readies an iPad App, Finally

Facebook had its application for the iPhone ready right when the Apple App Store opened in July 2008. But more than a year after the iPad went on sale, there is still no official Facebook app for it.
That is about to change. People briefed on Facebook’s plans say that in coming weeks the company plans to introduce a free iPad application that has been carefully designed and optimized for the tablet.
The app has been in production at Facebook for almost a year, going through several design iterations, and is now in the final stages of testing, according to these people, who declined to be named because they were discussing confidential product plans.
One person who works with Facebook said Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s chief executive and founder, has been heavily invested in the process, overseeing design decisions and the app’s unique features.
People who have seen the application said it has a slick design that has been tailored for the iPad and its touchscreen interface. Facebook developers and designers have also overhauled the Facebook Chat and Facebook Groups features for the application. And the app will go beyond the features available on the Facebook Web site by allowing users to shoot and upload photos and videos directly from the iPad’s built-in cameras.
“The photo and video experience is amazing, offering full resolution and full-screen images,” said a person who has seen the app.
Jaime Schopflin, a communications manager at Facebook, declined to discuss any future products. “We have a great relationship with Apple that is exemplified by our iPhone application, but with regards to an iPad application we have nothing to announce now, and cannot comment on future Facebook products,” she said. Apple declined to comment.
Facebook’s users have complained in the past that its Web interface is not optimized for the iPad or any other touchscreen experience. In response, a number of outside developers have introduced Facebook-friendly applications for the iPad, including My Pad, iFace and Friendly.
The new app could be a boon to both Facebook and Apple. Mobile applications and optimized mobile Web sites have been a major area of growth for Facebook, with the company saying that there are now more than 250 million Facebook users actively accessing the service on a mobile device. Facebook is approaching 700 million users worldwide.
A compelling Facebook application for the iPad could help Apple woo customers who are torn between buying an iPad and a competing Google Android tablet. Apple has sold more than 25 million iPads since the device was introduced last year.
Apple also plans to help Facebook promote the new application by featuring it prominently in the App Store, said a person familiar with the plans for the app.
In addition to the iPad app, Facebook also plans to introduce a better version of its Web site for the iPad. It is unclear when this will be unveiled, but it is not intended to compete with a Facebook iPad or iPhone application, and instead is meant “to supplement these experiences,” this person said

Next iPhone reaches final testing stage, Verizon likely won’t support 3G FaceTime this year

Prototype iPhone 4 from last year
A previously accurate Apple source has told 9to5Mac some interesting information regarding what 2011 holds for the iPhone and Apple’s popular FaceTime video chat service.
    • The next generation iPhone has reached the final testing stage (aka “AP” stage [Thanks, Chronic!]) and is now being carried around by high level Apple and carrier executives.
    • Although this has been assumed since the no-iPhone-at-WWDC-rumors broke, the current plan is for a September launch for the next-generation wholesale iPhone.
    • Apple and Verizon have yet to strike a deal regarding FaceTime over 3G for the Verizon network. Keep in mind that 3G and 4G aren’t the same thing. < Don’t read into that too much. Or maybe do.
    • Apple and Verizon are still working out kinks regarding support for iOS 5′s over-the-air updates, which we broke the news about, so carrier support may or may not be delayed past fall 2011.
While snooping around the iOS 5.0 SDK we located references to “N94″ and “N93.” These are internal code names for two unreleased iPhone models. As we have already told you, the N94 is an iPhone 4 with an A5 dual-core processor and it is likely the device that a small group of elite iOS app developers got their hands on in late April. The N93 is likely a carrier variation of the N94.
We aren’t too sure what this variation could be, as the only time a model number varied based on a carrier in iPhone history was with the iPhone 4: GSM is N90 and CDMA is N92. Verizon already leaked that the next iPhone features a GSM+CDMA chip, so perhaps the N93 or N94 is the Sprint model we told you about – or T-Mobile.
Oh, and one final thing… according to the iOS SDK, and the same snooping we used to break the news that the iPad 2 will feature the same cameras as the fourth-generation iPod touch, it looks like the next-generation iPhone will keep the 5 megapixel sensor found on the iPhone 4. Many of us were expected a boost to 8 megapixels after Seth broke the news about Sony CEO’s comments on Sony making cameras for Apple. Perhaps Apple never updated the SDK files, though, or maybe the N94 and N93 are scrapped devices all together. Maybe Apple took the extra three months to whip up something totally new: not just an iPhone 4 with an A5 to boot.
P.S: We are expecting some more intelligence soon, so stay tuned!

    OpenBox s9 - Sky News

    Hi

I'm struggling with lip sync issue. I'm happy to swap out HD channels with SD channels to overcome the problem, but my worst lip sync issue is with Sky News. As far as I can tell all SD Sky News channels cause reboot, and I have removed them.

I'm using NM_HDS2_CMT_1101030405 firmware after researching this issue on this forum.

The only other thing I've done is use a channel list created for 28.2

Any ideas, as it's really annoying. dreambox

It's slightly worse IMHO, and if I use TP Prog.rar in post 42 here, it's much worse.

Can channel lists have this effect. It's certainly my finding with Sky News HD.
    Openbox s9
If only I could get SD channel that would do me fine, but as already stated it causes reboot.

Any other ideas, otherwise I think I'm gonna revert back to the combo I was using.

What are the factors that can affect this other than firmware. My common sense says none, and I don't hear too many complaints about it here although it certainly does get mentioned.
Ive read elsewhere that sky news is still rebooting even with the new firmware which is meant to fix this. So , ya you are right. Its the box itself , not the channel lists causing the problems. I never watch sky news, its mainly just kids proggrames on my openbox. The only thing you can do is change channel and back again to sky news, this usually fixes the lipsync. Its a pain i Know .
i get the same on mine lip sync i change channel then back ,this is with latest firmware its worse than 2 firms ago resort back to before they put softcam on ,its better ,also freezes alot on sharing and, get a good channel list then skynews wont reboot it, if watching hd movies on new firmware your be ok until near end then piccy wil go blobky , and also my other boxes work fine off same dish so its not dish or anything else its the box , they obviously dont know how to get it to work properly...
That's not quite correct, it do display the EPG, but in a different format, one can still use the < > arrow keys to select different days.

At least that's how it performs with me, I'm currently running a motorized channel list, and I can see no differance, apart from the format of course.

    newbee dm500 user help

    newbee dm500 user help
Hi chaps i have pretty good kmowledge with the linux system and are able to flash new images no problem.
At the moment wholesale i have installed NabiloDM500-V08-MAXVA
as a lot of forums said it was a good stable image.
Heres my setup 90 cm motorised dish
i love trying different images its fun and its good for the community
i used to be able to flash an image then add my service and bouquet files in minutes on the dbox but unfortunatly i cant seem to find the correct files with filezilla i've tried a few things with no luck please help guys
I've always used DreamBoxEdit for editing and installing service and bouquet files.
I've never used Filezilla so cannot comment on using it for this or any purpose.
DreamBoxEdit is a purpose made tool for the job, it's easy to use and very comprehensive.
Use Google if you need to find it.
    Best wishes, John.
    Glad you've sorted that one.
I'm not sure about bulsat keys! Is it a sat package or a particular satellite?
In general, for most Emus, keys are placed in the /var/keys folder. For newcamd (I don't think it's used much now), they go in /var/scce.
The easiest way to keep keys up-to-date is to use a key updater. I use the demonisat updater which is available in the following post, with installation instructions:
TV Globo International on 13e ?
    This uses ANTR@G keys.
    Hope this helps?
    Best wishes, John.
    Edit:
OK. I've checked now. Bulsat is on 39E.

    Openbox / Solomend pvr

The info Hooley gave me was a link to another forum so can't really be posting that here so I'll try and break it down for you and whoever may need it in the future!

Firstly download the latest firmware which is attached, extract the .abs file from this and copy it to your USB flash device.

Before upgrading the f/w on your STB, make sure you do a factory reset!

Now plug your flash drive into your STB, goto tools and click on factory settings, now click yes to contiune and now the box will be restored to factory settings and will restart.

Once restarted, click on menu and goto the tools menu again, scroll down to upgrade by USB and click start, after the loading is complete, accept the upgrade, the STB will once again restart.

After the upgrade is complete, do another factory restart as per the instrustions above!

This f/w upgrade will fix the following issue's that user's have been experiencing:-
    + improved blind fast scan
+ improved cccam fast connect to server
    + licensed AC3 code
+ add manual edit cccam and key by remote
+ add DiSEqC and switch the same time work
+ setting CA/CI the same menu show

If for some reason you are unable to upgrade using USB you can use the serial loader programme attached along with a null modem cable, connect the box to your PC using the cable, start the programme and choose the f/w file you require, as soon as you press next, tuen on the receiver and it should sync and upload the f/w.

Now in order to upload a c-line to this box, prepare a Cccam.cfg file with your c-line in it, save this file to your USB flash drive. Connect your USB device to the STB, now press menu and goto Cccam settings and now select Cccam plug setiings and then OK. Now select read Cccam.cfg from USB and press OK. After it has read the available code, select account management and now you can select upto 4 share lines at one time!

After activating the share lines go back to Network Local Settings and select it and now press OK at DHCP "ON", then select Apply and then OK.

Once everything looks in order, press standby and reboot the box and you should be away to go!

Hope that helps someone, I haven't tried any of the above yet, still waiting for my box to come, the above is just a combination of the instructions I have found online by various other user's whom have this box, please PM me if you would the link to the other forum where most of this info can be found!

Remember this box has various names for it, I have found it to be called solomend/sathawk/skybox/openbox to name but a few but they are all the same just with different fascia's!

    set up openbox s9 guide

The setting up of the receiver is simple enough, one thing you should beware of is the display settings, in the Menu select -> System Setup -> TV System -> Video Out here you get two options RGB & YUV, if you select RGB then you have only two resolution options 480i & 576i, there is also an Auto option, if you wish to access the full resolution options the set the YUV then you get them all [480i - 480p - 576i - 576p - 720p 50 - 720p 60 - 1080i 50 and finally 1080i 60] the 50 and 60 options shown refers to the refresh rate of your television, so if your television refresh rate is 50Mhz then set the output to 50, for example [1080i 50] you will the get a crystal clear picture.

If your picture is not quite as good as you expect, try going into Menu -> System Setup -> Display Settings and change any of the following options, Brightness - Contrast - Saturation, once you have set them exit and your alterations will be stored.

Now you will proberbly need to set your nework up, so again enter the Menu -> Network Local Setting and set DHCP to ON, if your router is not DHCP compatable you will need to manually configure the settings, once you have done that click Apply and exit.

Now for the fun part, if you already have clines you will need to import them to the receiver, to do this use a flsh stick formated in fat32 and place your CCcam.cfg file onto the flash stick, insert the flash stick into the usb socket on the rear of the receiver, then go into Menu -> Network Local Setting CCcam Plug Setting -> Update Files by USB -> SELECT OPTION 1 [cccam.cfg] and click the yellow button to install your CCcam.cfg file, if all goes okay click exit and select Manage Config Files select option 1 [CCcam.cfg] now place a tick to each line you wish to activate, if for example you have 4 clines from a payserver activate all 4 lines you should then see online next to each line you activated with a tick, now you can exit the menu altogether, as you can now start to add satellites and channels.

    Please Note:
If you add the CCcam.cfg file after you have done a scan, then you will be required to reboot the receiver for the the file to become activated correctly.

Setting up a multi satellite system, click Menu -> Installation -> Antenna and Satellite Quick Setting if your going to use the USALS motor setup the Longatude and Latitude options and click Set Motor as USALS on all Satellites then exit.
If you are using the DisEqC1.2 motor, then all you need to do is ignore the longatude and latitude options and simply click on Set Motor as DisEqC1.2 on all Satellites then exit.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Quick Tip,
To move to a stored and activated satellite directly, just click the Zoom button, this will then display a list of all the satellites that you have stored and enabled, and then simply select the satellite you wish the dish to move to.

On a number of channels you can also remove the subtitles, simply by clicking the 'Subtitle' button and clicking Off, this will only work on channels that are broadcasting subtitles as an option, and not on channels that are broadcasting subtites by default, so if you get the message 'No Data' when clicking the 'Subtitle' button, that means the subtitles are being broadcast by default.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While still in the Installation menu select Satellite List and select each satellite you wish to access, the selection is not a full list but if you wish to add any satellite that is not in the list simply cick the green button to add another satellite.
Once you have setup you list of satellites, you will now need to scan them for channels, to do this you goto Menu -> Installation -> Antenna Setup and then using one of the < > arrow keys select the satellite you wish to scan from the list, once selected you will need to set the Lnb Frequency the default is universal so skip that unless you not using a universal Lnb, now set the Transponder it would be wise to set this to an active transponder and one you know you are capable of receiving, then you are setup on the satellite you will see the signal and quality levals.

Now scroll down to Motor type if it is not already set and select your motor type, now click on Motor setting and click Possition Setting the Satellite and Transponder should be as set previously, all you need to do now is set the position number to save the satellite to, for example you could save Astra 19.2east as position 1 -> Eutelsat W2 16east position 2 -> Hotbird 13east position 3 and so on ... now if you dish is not pointing at the satellite you wish to scan simply press eith the west or east button to move your dish to the correct co-ordinates, keeping an eye on the signal and quality bars, once you start to see the signal increase start making small movements untill you get the best possable signal, then click Save.

[For those of you who do not have access to a cline, you can also use the receiver with either a Cam, or a Card, as both are catered for on the receiver, only the bottom C.I Slot will work, as the top slot is emplty.]

To scan a satellite go into Installation, and select either, Single or Multi Satellite Search, as I use DisEqC1.2 I find it better to do a Single Satellite Search, now click on the option that suites you best, you will see there are only two scan options, Preset Scan & Blind Scan, the blind scan do not appear to be a true blind scan, as there are no options for you to configure, and it also did not find all the channels, but it's okay, and will locate most.

Once you have scanned a satellite succesfully you will need to exit the menu completely in order to view channels, once you have access to the channels you will proberbly wish to see if you clines are working okay, so select a channel you know your cline will open and if all is okay it should open.
